CS Online [2/22/12] – We had to try and confirm the rumor going around that the “Godfadr” at Nomad Cigar Company had pushed it too far and actually mailed a kitten in with a box of cigars.
First a bit of history;
The Nomad Cigar Company launched, officially, in 2012. It was founded by Fred “Godfadr” Rewey, a passionate cigar smoker that also has a knack for starting companies based on his hobbies.
From what we understand, once he was able to procure some great tobacco, Fred set out to do some things a bit differently.
Fred wanted his customers; he refers to them as “Cigar Fugitives,” to have great access to him, his cigars, and have some fun in the process.
The Nomad Cigar Company is off to a great start and building a strong following. With a solid cigar line, a killer cigar club where people earn points, and Fred constantly chatting with other smokers, he is on to something big.
So, what is the deal with mailing a kitten?
Fred has been known to throw stuff in with cigar orders, just for the fun of it, as a way of saying thanks for the order. Super cool “lighter” watches, hats, stickers, iPhone covers, travel humidors, etc. We are guessing it is whatever stuff he has lying around the office. He says he wants adults to enjoy that “free prize inside” feeling all over again.
He would be the first to tell you that he does not do it on every order because he still wants the focus to be the cigars – but he still include a hand signed card or note with every order.
The kitten rumor came about because when someone asked him what the strangest thing Fred threw in a box he replied, “a live kitten.”
It was presumed to be a joke, but there was never any follow up. Most people took it as a joke (Fred did some stand-up comedy at one point) and most people thought nothing of it…others we not so sure.
After tracking down Fred at the 2012 ProCigar event in Santiago, DR, we can happily report that Fred did not really mail a kitten…It was really a puppy*
*Of course we are kidding but why let the truth get in the way of a good story?
